I don't mind saying in public that I'm a big Wes Silcox fan.

Bull Rider Wesley Silcox from Utah is a six time Wrangler National Finalist and a World Champion... He left the 2007 rodeo season with Gold on his belt.

This year Wes and wife Jerika welcomed their first child to the world, a baby girl born in June.

"I've definitely got a lot more on my mind than I did before. She's awesome, I wouldn't change it for the world but she's just made life even better."

With that backdrop and with less than two months to qualify for this December's Wrangler NFR Silcox is on the stretch run to see if he can qualify for number 7, and he's got some work to do.  As of the middle of August Silcox was 29th in the PRCA's World Standings with a little less than $30,000 in earnings for the year, about $17,000 out of the top 15.

"My summer was a little slow," Silcox said.  "It started off okay but the summer was slow.  I've got a long way to go but I feel like I'm riding good and have some good bulls drawn so I've still got a chance to be there in December."

Silcox took a good first step on Saturday night, August 18 in Gooding, ID when he won the Gooding Pro Rodeo in Gooding, ID, making an 89 point ride on a Burns Rodeo Company bull named Smokin Frog to win more than $2,700.

"I had never seen that bull before but I heard some guys talking about him, he hasn't been ridden in a while.  They said he was going to kick out there real hard and be real good.  He turned back into my hand and was steppin' ahead a little bit.  I thought he might turn back the other way but he stayed in it and kept kickin'..."

You don't get to be a World Champion unless you are talented, confident, and a smart business man.  Silcox has all three qualities.

"Bull riders get 120, 125 rodeos, I've been to 89 rodeos so I've got lots of rodeos yet to use this year.  I'm entered in about every decent rodeo there is every day that I can enter so I think I can win a bunch of money.  I feel great, if I can stay healthy the rest of the year I've still got a chance to be there in December."

The 27 year old Silcox has is one of a handful of bull riders in the PRCA to have won more than a million dollars in his career.  You might remember he won the tenth round of the Wrangler NFR last December.  This year he's won rodeos in Austin, TX, Logandale, NV and Lakeside, CA in addition to his win in Gooding.
